Orphan Hsu Hsiang, brought up by step-father Yu Wei, has a strong and melancholic personality. After graduation from high school, he studies at night for the matriculation exam and at the same time takes several part-time jobs to help bear the family burden. Yu Wei, who has been a small fry in a side line, sinks to a floor man in a dance hall. He is subsequently fired by his boss due to quarrels with mamasan Ma Hsiao Ling. Yu Hsiang works part-time in a wholesale store. One night, while putting the day's income into the bank's night vault, he is robbed of everything including his own purse.
